Prayer                                         What is Prayer?

Prayer, according to the Christian faith, is humbly speaking with God. Adam spoke to God regularly during "the breezy part of the day," according to the Bible book of Genesis, part of what is referred to as the Torah. Daniel, the Hebrew prophet prayed three times a day, on his knees, and facing Jerusalem. He was living in exile at that time. His recorded prayers often revolved around concern for true worship among God's people, and Jerusalem. Previously, King David's prayers were recorded as songs, in the Psalms. At least half of the Psalms are attributed to David. Several beautiful Psalms of David are Psalms 86, 103, 139. Moses also, is know for his prayers, some of which are recorded as songs in the Psalms, notably, Psalms 90, 91.King of Judah Hezekiah prayed for God to extend his life when he was at the point of dying, and God extended his life for 15 years. Hezekiah also prayed for protection when the invading armies had encircled Jerusalem, and God miraculously killed 185,000 Assyrians by an angel in one night.

Jesus Christ prayed at times, all night long. One occasion in which Jesus prayed all night was before choosing his twelve apostles, and before he delivered his most well known sermon, known as The Sermon on the Mount. Matthew 5-7. John 17 is largely a prayer of Jesus recorded by the Apostle John, the Apostle most close to Jesus.

Jesus taught his followers to pray in the manner of the Lord's Prayer, his most famous prayer, "Our father in the heavens, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, even as we have forgiven our debtors, and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the wicked one." Matthew 6:9-12.

Previous to this, Jesus told his followers, not to pray the same things over and over again. So, Jesus wasn't giving a rosary type formula for prayer, rather, he was helping his followers to appreciate the more important matters of prayer, the things that it was appropriate and beneficial to be concerned about and pray about. Thus, a true Christian wouldn't pray for a new house, a new car, to win the lottery, or only pray when things get desperate. Prayer, is

interests, rather than one's own. Jesus said for the true Christian who puts "kingdom
interest" first in their life, "all these other things will be provided to them." Matthew 6:32-34.

When one feels anxious, has intense problems, one should humbly pray to God for wisdom and help. Being thankful is also of much importance, and we need to thank God regularly for his goodness and mercy towards us. Similarly, Jesus encouraged his followers to pray for our enemies, pray for those persecuting us, since God makes the sun shine upon both the righteous and the wicked.
Matthew 5:45-49.

                         Jehovah's Witnesses pray the most

A survey released in May of 2009 indicated that Jehovah's Witnesses are "the most prayerful" of all religions, Christians and non-Christian. About 89% of Jehovah's Witnesses, according to the survey, pray daily.  About 82% of Mormons pray daily, followed by "black [Christian] churches, 80%, followed by evangelicals, Muslims, Hindus, members of Orthodox churches, and Catholic.

Of Christians, mainstream Protestants were least likely to pray, only about 53% praying daily. And 45% of Buddhists pray daily. Only 26% of Jews stated that they prayed daily, the low percentage, however, might be due to the definition of prayer, which some Jews associate with prayer at the temple, rather than personal prayer, according to one Rabbi.

The study was conducted by Pew Research Center which surveyed 35,000 people.
